어제, 4월 1일부로 메이저리그가 개막했습니다.

맨날 재미없는 NBA나 미식축구만 보다가

메이저리그 개막경기를 TV로 보고 있으니.. 마냥 행복했습니다.

 

지난 시즌엔 야구장에 딱 한번 가봤는데,

시즌 막판에 홈팀인 오클랜드 A's가 이미 지구 1위를 확정지은 상태라

사람도 그렇게 많지 않았고,

MLB 구장에 처음 가봐서 그런지 얼떨떨한 기분으로 보고 왔습니다.

 

미국야구장에서 인상적이었던 것 두가지를 꼽는다면

우선, 맥주랑 햄버거가 무지 비싸다는 점,

그리고 7회가 끝나면 모든 관중들이 어떤 노래를 합창한다는 점입니다.

 

나중에 알고보니 그 노래는,

MLB 경기 중 7회 휴식시간(seventh-inning stretch)이 되면

어느 팀 구장에서나 똑같이 부르는 노래라고 합니다.

물론 그 노래를 들어본 적이 없었던 우리는

딴 세상에서 온 사람들처럼 멍하게 앉아있기만 했었죠.

이 노래는 1908년,

Jack Norworth(작사)와 Albert Von Tilzer(작곡) 두명에 의해

만들어졌다고 하는데,

재미있는 건 두 사람 모두 이 노래를 만든 후

2~30년이 지나서야 처음으로 MLB 구장에 가볼 수 있었단 사실.

 

그 후로 이노래는 몇몇 뮤지컬에서 불려지다가

지금은 미국국가, 생일축하송 다음으로

미국 사람들이 가장 많이 부르는 노래가 됐다고 합니다.

 

아래 가사처럼 몇가지 버전이 있는데,

야구장에선 후렴구만 부릅니다.
